Freight Crimes in Logistics

TAPA reported in October 2020 that over €100 Million was imposed in the EMEA region despite the problems caused by Covid-19 in the supply chain and the economic contraction. In particular, a total of 502 cargo thefts were carried out in the post-August period, when the negative effects of Covid-19 on the logistics sector decreased.

When the TAPA October issue is examined, it is noticeable that the damage caused by freight theft to the logistics sector is usually in similar ways. When looking at the crime categories, the top 5 methods of load theft are listed as follows:

  1. Vehicle Load Theft 66.9%
  2. Fraud 7.2%
  3. Truck theft 6.4%
  4. Warehouse Theft 5.5%
  5. Robbery 3.9%

When the load crimes are examined according to the place where they are carried out, the top 5 is formed as follows.

  1. Unknown Parking Spaces 59%
  2. 3rd Party Service Providers 9.1%

When tapa’s rates on load crimes are examined retrospectively, partnerships are found in the top 5 crimes. Load crimes are mainly in the form of theft of cargo in the vehicle and theft from unknown or unreliable parking spaces.

The most critical point in freight crime is thefts in unknown or unreliable parking spaces that account for close to 70% of freight crimes (Unknown Parking Spaces+3rd Party Service Providers). The reported loss of reliable parking in the economies of the EMEA region exceeds the €50 million band in 2020.

Emphasizing that the loss due to cargo theft in the world logistics sector is increasing every year, the report shows us the importance of reliable parking spaces that are not important in the sector and mentions that we can prevent the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in the global economy with the establishment of these structures.

On the other hand, according to the TAPA report, which shows that the crimes against the increasing shipments of health products have increased significantly due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it is understood that the safety of logistics processes is one of the priority considerations in the planning of the supply chain of the vaccine today, as work on the Covid-19 vaccine and its transportation continues.
